Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. This discoid slipware vessel features a large raised ring base with an eight-sectioned sun wheel in the recessed area, smooth rounded bottom walls, rolled sides, raised shoulders with a raised eight-pointed star as the central motif, a wide fill hole encircled by a raised ring, a small thumb rest, and a very narrow wick spout. Size: 3.125" W x 1.5" H (7.9 cm x 3.8 cm).

In Roman society, the eight-pointed star was a symbolic representation of the goddess Venus associated with both war and fertility. When the lamp was lit, this star design would have been used to bestow the blessings of Venus upon a family looking to conceive a child or bestow good fortune to troops prior to departing for battle.
