Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A very fine example of a mold-made pottery oil lamp of a round form with a small, trifurcated loop handle extending from the bowl and a small pointed spout jutting from the opposite end. The discus features tantalizing iconography of a vividly delineated animated nude male dancer. With his body depicted in composite profile, the dancer jumps with legs akimbo and upraised arms holding sticks, perhaps for percussion. Framing the scene is a repeating tongue motif. Size: 3.75" W x 1.625" H (9.5 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: private Schroeder collection, Boca Raton, Florida, USA, acquired before 1970
