Description:

ORIGINALLY OFFERED AT $400

Roman Empire, North Africa, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. A large ceramic oil lamp with deep red slip, a long nozzle, impressed alternating spiral and floral motifs on shoulder and an impressive relief image of an intricately detailed swimming fish between the two fill holes. On the bottom is a circular maker's mark. Lamps with the characteristic "North African" style were made in workshops all along the Mediterranean coast of Africa in the 4th to 5th century CE. Most scholars agree that Tunisia and Carthage were the main trade centers; however, it has also been suggested that Alexandria, Egypt may have been a production center as well. A fine example with a marvelous decorative program! Size: 6" L x 3.75" W (15.2 cm x 9.5 cm)
