Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, probably produced in North Africa, ca. 3rd century CE. Sweet and petite, a red-slipped terracotta plate with a stamped foot known as planta pedia (singular planta pedis) on the tondo and curvilinear handles with impressed dotted decoration. An example of Roman "fine ware" (term used by archaeologists to serve food and drink at the table) though given its small size, likely used to serve spices or seeds. This style with stamped designs represents classic North African redware and was exported throughout the Roman Empire. Size: 4.5" W x .875" H (11.4 cm x 2.2 cm)
