Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An interesting 75% silver ornament repousse decorated with a figure, and a thin electrum sheet secured to the top. The body suggests a slender young soldier, facing forward, one arm held up and the other to the side. Above the figure's head is a separate band made from electrum with a high quality 66% gold (equivalent to 15K+) composition, secured via the tips folded through pierced holes in the silver plaque. Thin panels made of precious metals like this one were applied to wooden boxes or caskets to serve as decoration. Size: 3.5" L x 1.5" W (8.9 cm x 3.8 cm); silver quality: 75%; electrum quality: 66% (equivalent to 15K+) gold, 31% silver; weight: 12.7 grams
