Description:

Egypt, Roman period to Coptic culture, ca. 2nd century CE. A delightful female idol carved from a hollowed-out bone, probably from livestock or a small wild ungulate. The female bust form is rendered with a beautiful classically-inspired visage, presenting large ovoid eyes, an arched browline leading to a petite nose, pursed lips, an elegant jawline, and ample cheeks, topped by a centrally-parted coiffure with delineated locks arranged in lobes, drawn away from her face, and braided down the back of her head. Her visage is topped by a tall polos and rises above a long tubular form with a slender neck and torso delineated on the upper section. A lovely portrayal, perhaps intended to depict a goddess or elite woman. Size: 1.125" in diameter at widest point x 4.5" H (2.9 cm x 11.4 cm)

Provenance: ex Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan USA acquired before 2000
