Description:

Egypt, Romano-Egyptian Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A hand-carved limestone figure depicting Bes, the bandy-legged dwarf deity who acted as a protector for women, children, and the weak. Bes stands alert with hands placed atop his knees, nude save for a delineated leopard-skin pelt tied around his neck, and with a short-cropped beard that resembles a lion's mane. Remains of his original plumed crown are visible above his low brow and puffy facial features. Bes' distinctive appearance symbolized his ability to bring joy, ward off negativity, and promote fertility within the home, making him a cherished household deity in ancient Egypt. Size: 1.2" L x 2.2" W x 4.5" H (3 cm x 5.6 cm x 11.4 cm)

Provenance: Collection of Dr. W. Benson Harer, Los Angeles, California, USA; ex-Christie's, New York "Antiquities" auction (June 4, 2008, part of lot 32); collected in Egypt by Egyptologist Gustave Jequier (1868-1946), Neuchatel, Switzerland
