Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Egypt, Romano-Egyptian Period, ca. 30 BCE to 2nd century CE. A beautiful onyx intaglio of a recumbent sphinx with head raised as she holds a petite object in her forepaws. Although the Great Sphinx of Giza is certainly the most famous, sphinxes have a large place in Classical mythology as well - probably because of the intermixing of Egyptian and Classical culture via trade routes across the Mediterranean. The Classical version of the sphinx, unlike the male Egyptian one, has the head of a human female, the body of a lioness, the wings of an eagle, and a serpent's tail. This lovely example can be easily set into a ring or pendant for a wearable piece of ancient history! Size: 0.5" L x 0.4" W (1.3 cm x 1 cm)

Provenance: private Danvers, Massachusetts, USA collection, acquired by descent; ex-USA collection, acquired before 2000
