Description:

Egypt, Romano-Egyptian Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A hand-carved wooden door for a personal shrine or reliquary box with a flat body bearing a pair of hinge plugs on the top and bottom of one side. The front features a white ground upon which black pigment forms a standing togate priest figure wearing a knee-length toga and holding a ceremonial hes vase. Above his tapered neck and ovoid head is a broad flower with eight petals that is perhaps representative of the sun. Doors like this example typically display intricate geometric motifs or important religious figures; this figure may perhaps be of similar significance. Size: 5.3" W x 9.2" H (13.5 cm x 23.4 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in June 2013; ex-private Montrose, California, USA collection; ex-private Los Angeles, California, USA collection
