Description:

Egypt, Roman Period, ca. 100 BCE to 100 CE. An adorable pair of handmade pottery hedgehogs. The first is formed from red terracotta and exhibits a hemispherical body adorned with spikes, stubby legs, and a pointed snout. Alternatively, the second stands on four petite legs with a bulbous body and long tail. Enveloped in shades of charcoal and ash greys, this charming creature points its long snout upwards, displaying an incised mouth and nose, as well as two round ears. Hedgehog figures such as these examples were believed to hold apotropaic powers by the ancient Egyptians and were taken on nautical voyages for protection. Size of largest: 3.5" L x 2.25" W x 1.75" H (8.9 cm x 5.7 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Illinois, USA collection; ex-Colin Holden, South Kensington, London, UK, acquired in 1967 from his grandfather who purchased in Egypt in 1909

  • Condition: The red clay hedgehog is missing both proper left feet. Gray hedgehog has had snout and tail reattached. Both have expected surface wear as shown with nicks/chips and abrasions commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with lovely earthen deposits in recessed areas.
