Description:

Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. A grey-green hard stone votive plaque, blade-shaped, with one side smooth and the other decorated with a relief image of the child god Harpocrates and the god Bes looming behind him. The mixture of traditional Egyptian gods and their attributes with new Romanized forms gives us an idea of the rich cultural milieu that existed in the central and eastern Mediterranean during this dynamic period. People chose the deity or the attributes of similar deities who they thought could bring them what they wanted, or with whom they identified, and religion seems to have been fluid rather than dogmatic.
