Egypt, Alexandria, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A mold-made sculpture of a youth of African descent, standing in contrapposto with weight shifted to one hip, and gesturing with his raised right hand. Nice traces of original white and pink pigment. The Nubians and the Romans (as well as Egyptians) had a complex relationship, and Nubians were frequent subjects of Roman artwork, likely intended to represent the exotic. Quite rare!
