Description:

Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pottery head of a grotesque male wearing a conical helmet with a prominent chinstrap. Intended to ward off evil, the grotesque presents thick brows, bulging eyes, plump, slightly parted lips, and a thick neck. The designation as a "grotesque" does not denote a revolting or otherwise off-putting presentation but rather one of veristic accuracy. Though some artists used the maladies and deformations of others to create exaggerated caricatures, others used such negatively-perceived aspects of certain individuals as a means of expressing them in a true-to-life approach. Size: 1.3" W x 1.7" H (3.3 cm x 4.3 cm); 3.3" H (8.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Lexington, South Carolina, USA collection, acquired October 1, 2008; ex-Encino, California, USA collection; ex-Ventura county, California, USA collection
