Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 30 BCE to 2nd century CE. A beautiful tube-shaped pyxis made from a hollowed-out bone and glazed with a pale turquoise color that suggests copper was used in making the pigment. The pyxis form, a rounded vessel with small fitted lid, is found throughout the ancient Near East and the Classical world. This example has several incised lines around its rim and delineating its slightly wider base. Twin tiny loops for suspension project from the upper sides, immediately above these lines. The neck is slightly narrower than the body of the rest of the pyxis, and the interior is unglazed. Comes with custom stand. Size: 1.3" W x 3.75" H (3.3 cm x 9.5 cm); height on stand: 4.5" (11.4 cm).
Roman period pyxides made from animal bone are often relatively plain, with simple elegance, like this example. They were used as part of a woman's cosmetic set or to hold small pieces of jewelry. See a similar example from the city of Rome at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2000.5a, b).
