Rose Walton (American, XX-XXI). "Bad White Dogs / Stolen Object" paint on wood panel, n.d. Initialed at lower left. Signed and titled with inscription on verso. With her characteristic humor, affection for animals, and sensitivity to rural life, Rose Walton transforms an everyday mishap into a whimsical visual anecdote. Two white dogs stand at center, caught mid-act with a brassiere dangling mischievously from their mouths, as if proudly parading their spoils. Rendered in Walton's signature painterly style - soft, hazy, and surrounded by clouds of muted color - the scene feels lifted from memory, both vivid and dreamlike. Walton's titles and inscriptions often blur the line between art and storytelling, and this example is no exception. On the reverse, she notes in childlike script: "This is a regular occurance on Walton Rd," lending the work an air of autobiographical humor. The "stolen object," lifted by these canine culprits, becomes a playful symbol of domestic chaos - perhaps referencing Walton's own observations from life on the rural road that shares her name. The result is deeply personal yet broadly relatable, capturing the idiosyncratic charm that defines Walton's folk-art legacy.
Artist statement: "I am a self-taught artist, never having gone to school past the 12th grade, and I have been 'arting' for as long as I can remember. My earliest memories of creativity are of making doll dresses out of candy wrappers and constructing animal figures from the wet mud found down near my uncles natural spring, or collecting discards of bottle caps, string, and old tin cans to make 'people families' with twig arms and green stick legs. I had the luxury of a childhood spent in exploring my tiny world to the fullest. From going on 'safari' with my 6 brothers to white mountain to look for buried treasures (white mountain was a junk pile out in the woods) to exploring natures cast offs of bird's eggs and acorns in the meadow behind our home I was blessed to have parents who provided all of us kids (there were 11 of us) with the freedom to explore, create, and to find our own way in this world. There was never a dull moment in our childhood. This love of exploring and treasure hunting has never left me, because thru my art, I can go back to those memories and recall the sensations of discovery that i felt as a child. My art brings me back to those exquisite feelings of discovery from my childhood. I have been married for 30 plus years and have 5 incredible, wonderful, awesome, cute, kind, patient, encouraging and loving children (see, i am a typical Mom). We have lived here on Walton Road in Pennsylvania for 22 plus years. In our Walton Road home, I have tried to share with my children the freedom and love of discovery that I had when i was growing up. Our home is one big art studio, where you will always find a 'project' in the works. Whether it be 'claying', 'dolling', 'painting' , or just making up banquets out of last nights left overs, there is always a bit of magic involved. SHIPPING LOGISTICS: As a courtesy to our clients worldwide, Artemis Gallery is happy to handle shipping for most lots sold, taking the hassle (and high cost!) out of having to arrange shipping on your own. Shipping costs will be added to your invoice at auction's end based on information given when you registered to bid - we strive to offer the most economical shipping costs to ensure safe transit. Our shippers of choice are DHL for International shipments and UPS for domestic shipments, but we are able to ship via other carriers at the buyer's expense as deemed necessary or by request.
For shipments of oversize items, Artemis Gallery will assist the buyer in working with a third-party shipping provider. For shipments outside of the USA, customs and duties may apply upon entry into said country, and this fee, if any, is the buyer's responsibility.
