Description:

Russia, 18th century CE. A thick bronze amulet with a relief image of St George fighting the dragon. The story of St George, a Roman soldier of the Emperor Diocletian who mythically fought a dragon - a story brought back by the Crusaders - has been an enduring symbol in Christianity. In the Russian Orthodox Church, St George's fight against the dragon is also seen symbolically as a manifestation of the internal struggle against the evil among everyday lives. This particular amulet is finely detailed - the horse, for example, wears a cloth decorated with St George's cross, and the details of the dragon's scales and the saint's armor are very clear. A frame of scrollwork and tightly packed Cyrillic letters gives the amulet form; jutting from the top is a relief carving of Christ's head, pierced for suspension. Size: 2.05" W x 3" H (5.2 cm x 7.6 cm)
