Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A brass traveling icon section presenting an image of a Russian three-bar cross on the cover and three saints within; While hard to identify in this example, icons like this often show a depiction of the Pantocrator Christ in the center, to the left the Virgin Mary presenting a scroll, and to the right Saint John the Baptist in his traditional camel hair tunic holding Jesus as the Lamb of God in a chalice . This image suggests the bread of the Eucharist - called Lamb (amnos), and the words spoken by John the Baptist by the river Jordan where he baptized his disciples, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world." Size: 1.375" W x 1.25" H (3.5 cm x 3.2 cm)

In order to support traveling priests on missions, bronze and brass religious objects were made that were small enough and light enough to be carried on long journeys through a difficult landscape. These religious articles were widespread in Russia by the 17th century, and are often mentioned in the 19th century writings of Pushkin and Chekhov.
