Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A finely carved wooden kovsh (or skopkar), a traditional Russian ladle or serving vessel, rendered in the charming form of a stylized bird. Smoothly shaped with a deep, oval basin for ladling liquids, the piece is balanced atop a small circular foot and features an elongated beak-like spout and a broad, upturned tail functioning as the handle. The surface is richly stained with a dark finish and incised with delicate repeating motifs along the body and tail. Kovshi like this were historically used to serve mead, kvass, or ceremonial drinks and often took on symbolic animal forms in folk traditions. Size: 8" L x 3" W x 3" H (20.3 cm x 7.6 cm x 7.6 cm)
