Description:

Native American, United States, Southwest, New Mexico, Santa Clara Pueblo, Tewa Tribe, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A wheel-thrown pottery bowl accompanied by three petite stone bear fetishes, the vessel signed "Nicolasa / Santa Clara" on the base for Nicolasa Naranjo (1907-2002). The bowl has a thick, rounded body that gently curves inward at the rim, its highly burnished surface painted in matte cream and black to create the stylized depiction of Awanyu encircling the form. Awanyu (or Avanyu) is a sacred, powerful deity in Tewa Pueblo mythology of the American Southwest, recognized as the guardian of water, lightning, and storms, often depicted as a plumed or horned serpent. Included are three carved stone bear fetish figurines, with attached beads and feathers. Size of bowl: 4.25" W x 3" H (10.8 cm x 7.6 cm)
