Southwestern United States, Kewa (Santo Domingo) Pueblo., ca. 1900 - 1920 CE. A large hand-coiled earthenware serving bowl whose warm red exterior contrasts with a cream-slipped interior animated by a bold black scalloped cloud-band below the rim and a central cruciform rosette of leaf-shaped elements punctuated by dotted rain marks. Expertly formed with rounded walls and a subtly flattened base, the vessel is finished with red and tan slips burnished to a soft sheen, while mineral-black paint delineates the rim and interior motifs; firing clouds and surface wear speak to long use. Kewa potters of the early 20th century favored such powerful, economical designs that echo ancestral Santo Domingo polychrome traditions. Size: 11" D x 6.75" H (27.9 cm D x 17.1 cm H)
