Sasanian Empire. Ancient Near East. Ca. Late 6th - early 7th century A.D. Four similar pottery bullae, each originally attached to a document or merchant bundle, all are impressed with a mounted horse and a general and holding a spear, horses wearing protective armor. Inscriptions around the borders. Additional seal impressions around the outer borders. The ex. Christie's example depicts the general from the west, and is inscribed: "Vistahm, the Chief of the Thousand, well-omened Khusro, grandee, General of the Aryans of the side of the west". All are intact, with some minor imperfections, one has a surface chip on the reverse. Size: 2-1/2"D. to 3-1/8"D.
Provenance: Private NYC. collection, one acquired from Christie's London, April 25, 2001, lot 24 (Western General), with a copy of the Christie's catalog listing and info.
