Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sawankhalok culture, Sukhothai Period, ca. 14th to 16th century CE. A well-preserved stoneware jar from the Sawankhalok-Sukhothai kilns, this vessel shows the practical and balanced design typical of Thai ceramics from the late medieval period. The jar has a rounded ovoid body, a narrow foot, and a tall flaring neck with a wide rim, a shape intended for storage and ease of access. The surface is finished in a muted gray-brown tone and decorated around the shoulder with neatly incised bands, including a repeating zigzag pattern characteristic of kilns at Si Satchanalai. Small raised clay nodes interrupt the decorative bands at intervals, likely applied to assist with securing a lid or covering the jar in use. The decoration is restrained but carefully executed, reflecting the controlled workmanship for which Sawankhalok pottery is known. Size: 11.5" Diameter x 14" H (29.2 cm x 35.6 cm)

Produced during a flourishing era of ceramic manufacture, jars of this type were widely traded throughout Southeast Asia and valued for their durability and consistent high-fired construction. This example retains its original form and surface details with clarity, offering a representative example of Sukhothai-period stoneware and its role in regional storage, trade, and domestic life.
