Joe Luiz (Portuguese / American, 1937 to 2021) "Baleen Scrimshaw", ca. late 20th to 21st century CE. A framed scrimshawed piece of whale baleen with a classical New England scene: buildings church, light house on a shoreline with 18th / 19th century whaling ships, and further out near the baleen tip are 2 humpback whales. The piece is signed; Luiz was lived in areas with rich whaling port histories, he was born on the Portuguese Azores Islands, moved to New Bedford Massachusetts, and Newport Rhode Island where he owned and ran his shop, "Scrimshaw Marketplace." Size of baleen: 57" L x 5.5" W (144.8 cm x 14 cm); frame: 62" L x 9" W (157.5 cm x 22.9 cm)
