Description:

Western Asia and Siberia, Scythian culture, ca. late 2nd to early 1st millennium BCE. A beautiful cast bronze amulet, nearly flat and undecorated on the back with two vertical loops for attachment, in the form of a standing bull. The animal has a powerful head with large horns, turned to face the viewer; the rest of the body is shown to the side, with thick legs and phallus, wide hooves, and a long, thin tail. Scoring on the surface creates an impression of short, thick fur. The culture we know as the Scythians (the name comes from Greek, and describes a non-unified people who lived a nomadic lifestyle stretched across a huge landscape) produced a range of fine metal objects. Size: 2" W x 1.45" H (5.1 cm x 3.7 cm); 2.95" H (7.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-private Ohio, USA collection, acquired in the early 2000s; ex-Aaron Gallery, United Kingdom, acquired in 1999
