Segner (American or European, 20th century). "Pedregal Mexico" watercolor on paper, 1936. Signed "Segner" with title and date in lower right corner. A delightful watercolor painting of the stony landscape of Jardines del Pedregal - Rocky Gardens in English - or simply El Pedregal: an area of lava fields formed by the eruption of the Xitle volcano in 5000 BCE in southern Mexico City. Though appearing here as the native crags and brush that once covered the area, El Pedregal was developed in the 1940s by Mexican modernist architect Luis Barragan, who began a project to both urbanize and preserve the land via a harmony of architecture and landscape. Consequently, El Pedregal is now an upscale residential neighborhood. Using an array of verdant greens and cool blues and grays, the artist vividly depicts the area's natural topography, preserving the untamed terrain of lush vegetation and rugged volcanic remains that can no longer be found there today. Size of painting only: 13.9" L x 9.4" W (35.3 cm x 23.9 cm); size with matte and frame: 20.6" L x 15.9" W (52.3 cm x 40.4 cm)
