Description:

Ancient Greece, Corinth, Korinthos, ca. 575 to 550 BCE. Three Corinthian polychrome aryballoi, the classic form comprised of a spherical body, rounded bottom, and a thick vertical handle joining the body to the disc-like lip, used to hold precious scented oils for the bath. All were glazed with the quatrefoil design with interstices and petals. The flattened rim surrounding the mouth of one example is decorated with concentric circular motifs. Such vessels were skillfully thrown, fired, and glazed with purple, coppery russet, and black hues against a buff beige ground. For a similar example, see Wisseman, Sarah U. Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum. Philipp von Zabern: Mainz, 1989. Page 7-8, Plate 5, 7. Size: largest measures 2.75" W x 2.75" H (7 cm x 7 cm)
