Description:

Northern Europe, England, Birmingham, ca. 1894 to 1941 CE. A handsome group of three English Birmingham silver sugar casters spanning the late Victorian era through the World War II period, illustrating the evolution of British silver tableware across nearly half a century. The tallest example, richly decorated with repousse floral ornament and a pierced domed lid, dates to 1894 and was produced during the Victorian period by the noted Birmingham silversmiths George Nathan and Ridley Hayes. Its elaborate decoration reflects the ornate aesthetic favored in late 19th century dining services. The second caster, of slightly more restrained form with a faceted body and pierced cover, dates to 1938 and represents the cleaner lines typical of Interwar British silver design. Size of tallest: 3" W x 7.5" H (7.6 cm x 19 cm); total weight: 422.2 grams

Completing the group is the most petite example, a streamlined cylindrical caster produced in 1941 during the World War II period by Albert Edward Jones, a respected Birmingham maker whose work continued even amid wartime austerity. Together, these three sterling silver casters present a compact survey of changing taste and craftsmanship in English table silver from the Victorian era through the early 20th century.
