Suzuki (Japanese, 20th century). "Fukujin" painted wood mask, June 1984. Signed, titled, and dated on verso. A cheerful Japanese wood mask portraying Fukujin, one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, revered in Japanese folklore for bestowing happiness, longevity, and abundance. Carved from a warm, golden-toned wood, the face is rendered with lifelike joy: crescent eyes crinkle beneath five sharply incised brow lines, while deep dimples and rounded cheeks lead to an open-mouthed smile revealing silver-painted teeth. Subtle darkened pigment around the eyes and cheeks lends expressive nuance and theatrical charm. The reverse is inscribed vertically in black ink with the word "Fukujin," followed by a date and carver’s name: "June of Showa 59" (equivalent to 1984), and "Suzuki." This signature and date confirm the work as a modern interpretation of a traditional mask, handcrafted by Suzuki in the late 20th century for festival or decorative use. Size: 4.1" L x 6.9" W x 9.9" H (10.4 cm x 17.5 cm x 25.1 cm); 13.3" H (33.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Fukujin masks often appear in theatrical performances, shrine processions, and seasonal festivals, where their beaming expressions invite luck and mirth. Specifically, the character may be used in Kyogen farces or folk celebrations rather than classical Noh drama. This example, with its gentle features and finely polished surface, exemplifies the ongoing vitality of Japanese mask carving traditions.
