Suzuki (Japanese, 20th century). "Fukujin" painted wood mask, June 1984. Signed, titled, and dated on verso. A cheerful Japanese wood mask portraying Fukujin, one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, revered in Japanese folklore for bestowing happiness, longevity, and abundance. Carved from a warm, golden-toned wood, the face is rendered with lifelike joy: crescent eyes crinkle beneath five sharply incised brow lines, while deep dimples and rounded cheeks lead to an open-mouthed smile revealing silver-painted teeth. Subtle darkened pigment around the eyes and cheeks lends expressive nuance and theatrical charm. The reverse is inscribed vertically in black ink with the word "Fukujin," followed by a date and carvers name: "June of Showa 59" (equivalent to 1984), and "Suzuki." This signature and date confirm the work as a modern interpretation of a traditional mask, handcrafted by Suzuki in the late 20th century for festival or decorative use. Size: 4.1" L x 6.9" W x 9.9" H (10.4 cm x 17.5 cm x 25.1 cm); 13.3" H (33.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Fukujin masks often appear in theatrical performances, shrine processions, and seasonal festivals, where their beaming expressions invite luck and mirth.
