Description:

Italy, Sicily, Siculo-Punic, ca. 320 to 300 BCE. AR tetradrachm (17.4 g). Obverse: Head of Arethusa left, wearing wreath of grain ears, triple-pendant earring and necklace; four dolphins around. Reverse: Horse's head left, palm tree with date clusters behind, 'MMHNT' in Punic script below. SNG Lloyd. Size: 1" W (2.5 cm)

Punic Sicily seems to have been influenced by Athens, at least in its production of coinage, suggesting that the city, while influenced by Carthage, may have been a fairly independent city-state. Is this a sign of Carthaginian imperialism or a more laissez-faire attitude? These are the kinds of research questions that this beautiful coin raises.
