Description:

Bonnie Halsey-Dutton (American, Contemporary). "Handprint in History" oil on canvas, 2008. Signed at bottom right. A striking painting of a rock wall embellished with petroglyphs by Bonnie Halsey-Dutton, rendered in her visually poetic style and vibrant color palette. The composition includes a spotted horse in profile at the lower right, a standing figure behind who reaches toward a pair of birds, a group of human silhouettes in the distance, and a large handprint in the foreground. In the artist's words, "A handprint is symbolic of leaving one's mark. A handprint is individual to only one person who lived on this earth: each fingerprint being uniquely different. The imagery in this artwork is meant to be as mysterious to the viewer today as the meaning of original symbolic petroglyphs." A mesmerizing painting set in a gorgeous burled wood frame. Size of painting: 11.25" L x 9" W (28.6 cm x 22.9 cm) Size of frame: 15.76" L x 12.6" W (40 cm x 32 cm)

Bonnie Halsey-Dutton was born and raised in South Dakota and is inspired by the local cultures where she resides as well as their history. Petroglyphs represent the identities of prehistoric peoples whose identity is unknown. In her words, "Due to the passage of time, the full meaning of ancient petroglyphs is largely lost. Regardless, the making of a mark on stone implies the desire for the message to have permanence. Humans throughout time have identified with the sacred by leaving their mark."

Dr. Halsey-Dutton is both a professional visual artist and a fine arts educator, holding a PhD in Art History and Education from the University of Arizona. She exhibits her artwork both nationally and internationally, and also teaches art education workshops at home and abroad.
