Description:

Auguste and Antonin Daum (French, 1853-1909 and 1864-1930 respectively) and Louis Majorelle (French, 1859-1926). Art glass vessel with wrought iron frame, ca. 1900. Signature with a Cross of Lorraine on underside. A striking art glass vessel by Daum Nancy blown into an Art Deco wrought iron frame by Louis Majorelle. The glass presents a breathtaking emerald green hue with wonderful translucency as well as patches of golden mica adorning the body and walls. Its form is broad and round with straight walls leading to a gently flared rim and a flat mouth, and the wrought iron frame features repeating spiral motifs flanked by twin columns. This combination of art glass and fine wrought iron work makes for a truly stunning piece! Size: 10.125" in diameter x 2.375" H (25.7 cm x 6 cm)

Daum Nancy glassware was created by the brothers Auguste and Antonin Daum who took over their father's glass factory in Nancy, France during the 1870s. Until the 1890s, the Daum factory made watch crystals and utilitarian glassware; however, the brothers decided to create art glass from the 1890s through the early 20th century, and following World War I, Daum Nancy transitioned from Art Nouveau to Art Deco designs.

Louis-Jean-Sylvestre Majorelle, known as Louis Majorelle, was a French designer who worked in the tradition of ebeniste (French craftsmen/cabinet makers), creating furniture with nature-inspired motifs (waterlily leaves, dragonflies, plant stems and tendrils), and also ironwork for architecture (staircase bannisters, balconies etc). In 1901, Majorelle also became a founding member of the Ecole de Nancy (also known as the Alliance provinciale des industries d'art). This was a group of artists, architects, industrialists, and art critics in Lorraine who worked in collaboration, usually in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles.
