Description:

Dorothy Strauser (American, 1908-2005). Oil on board, 1965. Signed and dated at the lower right. A wonderful painting of a horse-drawn fire truck by self-taught folk artist, Dorothy Strauser. Strauser captured the excitement of the scene as the fireman and his horses race through an otherwise peaceful residential neighborhood. All is delineated in a vibrant color palette with Strauser's playful sensibility. A wonderful example from this important figure in the world of American Folk Art. Size of painting: 9.875" L x 23.75" W (25.1 cm x 60.3 cm) Size of frame: 10.625" L x 24.7" W (27 cm x 62.7 cm)

Dorothy "Dot" Strauser had solo exhibitions at the Everhart and Burliuk Museums and also exhibited her art at Bertha Shafer and Frank Lee Galleries as well as the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City. A very accomplished self-taught artist, Dorothy Strauser's works were collected by respected private and corporate collections as well as famous artists including sculptor Louise Nevelson and painter Red Grooms. In addition to painting, Dorothy Strauser made hooked rug pictures from textiles that she collected and dyed. Furthermore, Dorothy Strauser and her husband, the self-taught artist Sterling Strauser, were important figures in the American folk art scene. They championed the works of folk and outsider artists such as Jack Savitsky, Victor Joseph Gatto, Ironside Pry, Charlie Dieter, Joseph Polinski, and Justin McCarthy - credited with the discovery and support of many of these self-taught artists. Honoring their contributions to folk art in America, Chuck and Jan Rosenak dedicated their Encyclopedia of Twentieth-Century American Folk Art and Artists to the Strausers in 1991. In their dedication, the Rosenaks stated, "They taught us to see, and that seeing could be fun." In addition, the Folk Art Society of America presented the couple with its Annual Award of Distinction in 1993 and Dorothy won CoTA's (Collaborations: Teachers and Artists) award for the visual arts in 2003.
