**First Time At Auction**

Gay Patterson (American, 1948-2019). "Lilacs" acrylic on paper mounted on linen covered board, n.d. Signature below the stems. A stunning painting depicting clusters of lilacs in all their luminous lavender and violet glory by Santa Fe artist Gay Patterson. Patterson created a bold visual by bringing the beautiful blooms right up to the picture plane - so close to the viewer that one can almost smell their sweet scent! Heralding the early spring, purple lilacs are symbolic of youth, renewal, joy, and love. A breathtaking homage to this wondrous flower by Gay Patterson who like masters before her - i.e. Mary Cassat, Vincent Van Gogh, and Claude Monet - skillfully rendered lilacs with her brush and palette! Size: 22.3" L x 23" W (56.6 cm x 58.4 cm) Size of frame: 28.5" L x 29.125" W (72.4 cm x 74 cm)

Gay Patterson passed away on June 12, 2019 from complications related to a squamous cell carcinoma. Her artist's statement provides precious insight to her work. The following is a poignant excerpt: "Over decades, I seem to have embedded notions of ephemerality, motion and the constant of change in my work. I’m not sure if I’m trying to understand mutability, nail it down or accept it, but it is a primal state of life, and so very beautiful. What you see, feel and think depends on just how you approach everything, including art. In looking at a painting, no part exists in isolation but alters in relationship to what it is next to, where it is viewed from, what the quality of light is and every experience you bring along."
