Description:

Harry Hering (American, 1887-1967). Oil on board, ca. 1930. Signed on lower right. A vibrant painting by Harry Herring, a self-taught American artist beloved for his distinct style, replete with expressive figural representation, lush brushstrokes, and a wonderful command of the palette knife. In this composition, Herring presents farmhands working the land and erecting a structure, perhaps a scarecrow, before a grand adobe building with a Spanish red-tiled roof. While probably best known for his paintings of dock scenes in Provincetown, Massachusetts where he was a regular at the famous Cape Cod art colony, in this painting, Hering presents a farm scene in a different region of the US - likely the Southwest or California. Size of painting: 18.375" L x 22.25" W (46.7 cm x 56.5 cm) Size of frame: 22.75" L x 26.75" W (57.8 cm x 67.9 cm)

Harry Hering's works have been collected by major public collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Newark Museum in New Jersey, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. His art has also been exhibited at The Art Institute of Chicago, The National Academy of Design in New York, The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, The Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, and the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC as well as respected New York galleries such as Milch Gallery and Rehn Gallery.
