Heriberto Juarez (Mexican, 1932-2008). Untitled brass mask, ca. 1960s. Signed on verso. A wonderful mask by Mexican sculptor Heriberto Juarez. This piece was inspired by Mesoamerican works and depicts a visage comprised of openwork eyes, a naturalistic nose, a closed mouth with full lips, and fleshy cheeks. The forehead and cheeks are adorned by pins and beads as well as scarification marks surrounding the attached beads in radiating star-like patterns and running down the length of the nose. Finally, a head ornament adorned with a central pinned bead surrounded by radiating incised marks and topped with five golden spheres crowns the center of the forehead. Size: 6.7" W x 8.5" H (17 cm x 21.6 cm); 12" H (30.5 cm) on included custom stand.
Heriberto Juarez was a self-taught sculptor, best known for his depictions of animals and women. Interestingly, he wanted to be a bullfighter when he was young but abandoned that path once he learned that he could make a living as an artist. Although he had no formal artistic training, he did learn from accomplished mentors such as Juan Soriano and Juan de la Cruz. In addition, Juarez studied the creations of the ancient Greece, Egypt, and Mesoamerica, as well as those of modernist masters Picasso, Rodin, and Henry Moore. Over the course of his career, Juarez' sculptures were shown in over 70 solo exhibitions in Mexico and the United States.
