Description:

Jon Zahourek (American, b. 1940). "Orange Faced Indian" oil on board, ca. 1960s to 1980s. Signed at upper right. A striking portrait of a Native American man by Jon Zahourek. Zahourek rendered the sitter in a bust-length pose with a boldly painted visage and minimally defined garments. The portrait is set in a custom frame with the inner molding painted orange to complement the sitter's visage. This color choice may have been Zahourek's clever parry to the pejorative term "redskin" - interestingly, the color orange (rather than red) has positive connotations for Native Americans, symbolizing both sunshine and the power of regeneration. Size of painting: 24" L x 18" W (61 cm x 45.7 cm) Size of frame: 27.7" L x 21.625" W (70.4 cm x 54.9 cm)

In the 1960s, Jon Zahourek dropped out of college to become an artist. By way of Taos, New Mexico and later Denver, Colorado Zahourek was part of a thriving community of artists, exhibiting his work with prominent contemporaries including Ned Jacobs, Buffalo Kaplinski, George Carlson, and Fritz White. In the 1970s, Zahourek moved to New York to teach painting. He continued as an artist and educator, and eventually fueled his passion for anatomy into developing a system for teaching anatomy which has been used by more than 6,000 classrooms across the United States.
