Description:

Margaret Tafoya (Native American, Santa Clara Pueblo, 1904 to 2001), ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A substantial blackware pottery olla with a highly polished, lustrous burnished surface and a strong, rounded form tapering to a flat base. The shoulder is encircled by a deeply carved stepped geometric motif, crisply incised and contrasting with the smooth body. The surface shows subtle variations in tone and light reflection typical of traditional firing techniques. Signed on the base "Margaret Tafoya." Margaret Tafoya (1904 - 2001) was a master potter of Santa Clara Pueblo who helped elevate traditional blackware pottery into a highly regarded art form through her finely polished vessels and carved designs. Recognized as a matriarch of Pueblo pottery, she received the National Heritage Fellowship in 1984, and her family continues her artistic legacy. Size: 11" W x 11.5" H (27.9 cm x 29.2 cm)
