Description:

Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. This playful terracotta orange slip vessel displays a raised ring base with a concaved center showing the signature of ?T??T?. The lamp also has steep rounded sides, flat shoulders with a repeating motif of grape bunches and swans, a small tab-shaped handle, a small fill hole, and a larger wick spout. The recessed tondo features an intimate entwinement of a man and a woman riding on the back of an aurochs bull. A provocative scene indeed!
