Description:

Tom Russell (American, b. 1950). "Old Hopi Dream Altar" acrylic on canvas, 2014. Signed on lower right. Signature, date, and title on verso. A magical painting by Tom Russell depicting a sacred Hopi altar that displays several katsina figures. All is delineated in Russell's signature loose brushwork and Fauvist manner with a vibrant palette of periwinkle, blush pink, buttery yellow, mint green, ruby red, peach, and white against a jet black ground for a dramatic effect. The painting's title is "Dream Altar" and dreams are of paramount importance to the Hopi - more important than times of wakefulness according to Hopi elders. Traditionally, the contents of dreams are shared each morning, and it is thought that realities of the waking world manifest in the Dream World. The word dream in Hopi culture is "dimoki" which means "bundle" - in essence, dreams are understood as bundles of images and thoughts occupying the mind during sleep. A captivating painting that conveys the power of dreams in Hopi culture. Size of sight view: 23.7" L x 17.625" W (60.2 cm x 44.8 cm)

Of note, in addition to creating mesmerizing paintings, Tom Russell is a singer-songwriter who has written songs recorded by Johnny Cash, KD Lang, Iris Dement, Nancy Griffith, Ramblin Jack Elliott, and more!
