Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A fine standing axe god figurine carved from pale sage-green stone with dark inclusions. The figure stands atop delineated string-cut legs and has a rectangular torso with a horizontal groove along the waist, angular shoulders, and a slender neck line. The square head boasts an abstract visage of projecting cheek nodules, a triangular nose, a string-cut mouth, thick eye brows above recessed ocular grooves, and a central, biconically-drilled suspension hole in the forehead.
