Description:

Oceania, Solomon Islands (New Georgia), ca. 1950s CE. A striking woven plant fiber shield, of an elongated ovoid form, with alternating light and dark fibers forming a stylized Frigate Bird motif. A thick woven handle is on the back. Waite, in her "Art of the Solomon Islands" (1983), writes of these shields: "Their design is one of restraint and symmetry with a feeling of elegance... Wicker fighting shields of this general type were once utilized in the New Georgia Islands, Santa Isabel, Guadalcanal, and Florida Islands." Today these shields are a rare find! Size: 9.45" W x 33" H (24 cm x 83.8 cm)
