Lot 27
Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE. A terracotta female figure modeled in the anasyrma pose, the gesture of lifting her drapery to reveal the body beneath. She stands bare-chested, her arms angled to the front where the folds of her garment are gathered in low relief. The face is framed by a lavish headdress with voluminous locks and textured ornament, lending her presence an almost theatrical grandeur. Figures such as this were produced in colonial centers of South Italy influenced by both Greek and indigenous Italic traditions. The anasyrma pose, with its associations of fertility, protection, and apotropaic display, drew upon a long Mediterranean tradition stretching from Demeter and Aphrodite cults to the ritual figurines of local sanctuaries. The combination of bare torso, elaborate coiffure, and schematic lower body reflects both the symbolic role of the figure and the stylized aesthetics of colonial terracotta production. Size: 2.4" W x 7.1" H (6.1 cm x 18 cm); 7.8" H (19.8 cm) on included custom stand.
