Description:

Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Dayak peoples, ca. mid 20th century CE. A wooden anthropomorphic shield, painted with an ashy black and with white shell spiral-cut eyes. On the back is a curved handle. The openwork motifs of the long body give it a light, dramatic appearance that indicates it was created for aesthetic purposes rather than to be used in war!
