Description:

Egypt, ca. 500 BCE. These faience beads have been restrung in an eight-stranded arrangement with small silver details and clasp. Although their appearance from a distance is blue/green, the beads are a variety of colors, including reds, yellows, and blacks. "Egyptian faience" was known as "tjehnet" to the ancient Egyptians, meaning brilliant or dazzling. It was made by grinding quartz or sand crystals together with various elements, including copper oxide, which gave it its distinct blue/green tint. Faience beads were used in everyday jewelry and also used to make burial nets to be placed over mummies. Size: the necklace is roughly 6" diameter and approximately 18 1/2" long unclasped. Provenance: Ex-Simone Simonian collection acquired 1982 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
