Description:

Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. A beautiful necklace composed of three braided strands, each composed of hundreds of faience seed beads of many different colors - brown, orange, grey, green, and multiple blues from dark to light. To the Egyptians, faience was known as "tjehnet," meaning brilliant or dazzling. It was made by grinding quartz or sand crystals together with various elements, including copper oxide, which gave it its distinct blue/green tint. Faience beads were used in everyday jewelry and also used to make burial nets to be placed over mummies. Stringing and clasp are modern. Size: 28.7" L (72.9 cm)

Provenance: private Simonian collection, acquired before 1970
