**Originally Listed At $400**

West Africa, Nigeria, Mumuye culture, ca. early-20th century CE. A striking and highly stylized wooden figure attributed to the Mumuye people of northeastern Nigeria. Characterized by an elongated linear silhouette, this abstract sculpture features exaggerated anatomical proportions including bent arms, broad shoulders, and oversized legs with pointed feet. The torso, forearms, and lower legs are wrapped with rattan or cane strips and the eyes are inlaid red beads. The head is carved with angular planes and a flattened face bearing a projecting nose and squared jaw, topped with a tall crest rising from the crown. This powerful form would have likely served a ritual or protective function, representing a spirit figure or ancestor within Mumuye society. Mounted on a modern base. Size: 5" W x 35" H (12.7 cm x 88.9 cm); 35.25" H (89.5 cm) on included custom stand.
