Description:

Oceania, Melanesia, Fiji, ca. 19th century CE. A war club carved from dense tree rootstock, likely ironwood. This formidable weapon was both a practical tool of warfare and a powerful symbol of status in Fijian society, where armed conflict was a frequent part of life. The club features a striking head formed from the natural root system, trimmed into blunt, rounded projections that concentrate weight for forceful impact. The shaft is incised near the grip with rows of zigzag triangular patterns, enhancing both grip and ornamentation. A rich, dark patina covers the surface, and remnants of a woven vegetal fiber wrap cling to the butt. Size: 42" L x 5" W (106.7 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: Ralph T. Coe Center for the Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA; From a New Zealand collection in Auckland, 2000; Purchased from Tony Milton in December 2000.
