Lot 9
Egypt, Late Period, Dynasties 26 through 30, ca. 662 to 315 BCE. In a word - stunning! A very fine example of the mummification skills of the ancient Egyptians. Tightly wrapped mummified falcon in linen soaked in deep brown resin, details of the face added in black pigment. While known primarily for mummifying humans, Egyptians also commonly mummified their animals as well. In addition to house pets buried alongside their owners, a large market existed for mummified animals from birds to cats to crocodilesintended as sacred offerings to Egypts many gods. So large, in fact, that an entire industry arose, which researchers believe produced more than 70 million animal mummies between 800 B.C. and 400 A.D. This incredibly well preserved example has been X-rayed showing very distinctly that a true falcon resides inside. - X-ray included. Size: 1" H (2.5 cm)
