Description:

Pre-Columbian, Post Classic Period, Mixtec or Aztec, central Mexico, ca. 1200 to 1521 CE. An incredibly unusual tripod bowl, with skillfully rendered codex style polychrome painting in hues of red, orange, beige, and chocolate brown - featuring an eight-petaled flower blossom in tondo - and feet of a circular wheel or earspool form with open centers. This type of earthenware belongs to Mixteca-Puebla ceramics, and vessels like this one - created with an eye for impressive design and painstakingly delineated decorative/iconographic programs - were not utilitarian vessels but instead were safeguarded for ceremonial purposes. Size: 7.25" in diameter x 3.375" H (18.4 cm x 8.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Houston, Texas collection formed in the 1960's, then sold at auction in Houston in the 1980's
