Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Moche II Phase, ca. 300 CE. A very fine bichrome stirrup vessel depicting a condor, the largest raptor of the Andes, modeled in relief on both sides of the piece. In the Pre-Columbian world, the soaring flight patterns of this bird of prey made it an ideal metaphor for the sun. What's more its speed, visual acuity, and powerful talons were models for the successful hunter and warrior. Able to fly to impressive heights, condors could make dynamic dives to pursue their prey. The Moche are famous for their renderings of dramatic iconography, and this piece is no exception. The artist meticulously modeled the bird's form and ravenous disposition. Just look at the determination in those eyes! Size: 6.375" W x 9.875" H (16.2 cm x 25.1 cm)
